They enable customers to safely access accounts, transfer funds, and make purchases without the risk of threat actors and criminals stealing funds or data. Delivery time is a critical performance issue with OTPs. Delays in account activation processes or purchases can lead to a loss of customer interest. Messages must be delivered within 10 seconds of the customer’s request for an OTP to ensure their continued interest. Delivery time is even more complex when OTP messages have to cross international borders. To accomplish this, MMDSmart works with Infobip to ensure OTP messages traverse borders over low-latency SMS rates and have high delivery rates. MMDSmart has direct operator connections in a number of regions, but working with Infobip’s direct operator connections increased our coverage area and allows us to provide reliable OTP services globally. As markets across the globe are experiencing a decline in international business SMS traffic, Capacity investigates the causes and the steps the industry are taking to adapt. While domestic SMS traffic makes up the majority of SMS volumes, international traffic is making up 30-35% of spend from companies using the channel due to high rates. With big tech withdrawing from SMS one-time passcodes (OTPs), which makes up the vast majority of international SMS traffic, the health of the international SMS ecosystem is at stake. A decline in OTP SMS volumes is not completely unexpected. Data from Mobilesquared, a messaging analysis firm, showed OTP traffic peaked in 2022 and in June 2023 it was projected to experience a steady decline as brands sought alternative channels and means to verify users. OTP traffic was expected to shrink from 88. 57% of international traffic to 63. 47% by 2027. International A2P traffic as a whole was projected to peak in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 4. 55%. But the reality is far worse. MobileSquared’s projections just six months later in January 2024 showed that 60% of markets were in decline, and OTP’s share of international traffic was projected to fall even further to just 44. 63% by 2027. Even more startling, the revised projects expected CAGR of A2P SMS to fall by 3. 55%. So What’s Happened? Ira Cohen: We thankfully have not personally suffered from illness or job loss, although we have many acquaintances who have suffered a personal loss. The mobile industry continues to advance the roll out of rich communication services (RCS) with over 100 networks now live. RCS as a business application is particularly interesting as it is the sole rich messaging technology which allows both application to person (A2P) outbound messaging from businesses to end users as well as person to application (P2A) inbound messages from end users to enterprises, brands and other organisations. However, implementation is complex due to the fragmentation of its ecosystem and a lack of alignment on some fundamental options could limit its scalability and effectiveness. As an open-standards-based messaging platform, RCS has many stakeholders building to a single standard and market adoption requires agreement on the implementation of fundamental technology and business practices to deliver full interoperability. As part of MEF’s Future of Messaging Programme, we’re delighted to announce the roll out of Trust in Enterprise Messaging (TEM). The service is backed by an industry Code of Conduct for A2P (Applications to Person) SMS which was developed by the 30+ participants of MEF’s Future of Messaging Programme that include MNOs Telefonica, Telenor and Vodafone, messaging companies and signalling providers. Read the full press release here The global code sets out best practice for all actors operating within the A2P SMS sector and is based on 10 principles offering guidance on commercial, procedural and technical requirements as well as an emphasis on consumer protection. A self-regulatory service, TEM accelerates market clean-up and educates enterprise messaging solution buyers about the threats of fraudulent practices and poor procurement processes. An independent Compliance Committee will oversee the Code and will include representatives from trade associations, independent lawyers and local regulators.
